This week, we’re turning the spotlight on one of the most graceful, gentle, and surprisingly laid-back breeds—the Greyhound. Often misunderstood as high-energy dogs because of their racing background, Greyhounds are actually some of the calmest and most relaxed companions you’ll ever meet.
At Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue, we’re lucky to meet many beautiful Greyhounds who are ready to swap track life for a warm sofa, soft bed, and loving family. Let’s take a closer look at why Greyhounds make such wonderful pets!
Breed Overview
💙 Size: Large (generally 25–40 kg)

Why We Love Greyhounds
Despite their athletic appearance and history on the race track, Greyhounds are famously known as “45mph couch potatoes”. They absolutely love a quick zoom around the garden or park—but after that, they’re more than happy to spend the day snoozing in a warm, comfy spot.
They are incredibly gentle, affectionate, and easygoing, often forming deep bonds with their humans. Greyhounds tend to have calm, quiet personalities and are usually polite, well-mannered house guests.
They’re a fantastic match for people looking for a low-maintenance but loving companion, and they often settle beautifully into family life, including homes with older children and other dogs.
The Ideal Home for a Greyhound
Greyhounds are surprisingly adaptable. While they do enjoy short bursts of exercise, they don’t require endless walks or a huge garden—just regular strolls, comfort, and lots of cuddles. They suit a variety of home environments, from busy families to quieter homes with older adults.
Due to their slim build and fine coat, they do feel the cold easily, so they’ll need a nice warm coat in winter and a cosy place to rest indoors.
Many Greyhounds also get along well with other dogs, and although some may need guidance with smaller pets or cats (due to prey drive), many can learn to live harmoniously with the right introductions and support.
Calm, Loving, and Overlooked
Sadly, Greyhounds are one of the most overlooked rescue breeds. Often retired from racing at a young age, they can spend far too long waiting for a second chance at life in a loving home.
They’ve spent their early lives working—now it’s their turn to relax, be spoiled, and just be dogs. Every Greyhound deserves a warm bed, a gentle hand, and a family to call their own.
